Mr. Indra Prasad Aryal is an advocate and distinguished criminal law expert with an extensive career in human rights activism. He was elected as the fourth President (1st term) of the Human Rights Organization of Nepal (HURON) by the 13th National Convention and later as the sixth President (2nd term) by the 15th National Convention.

With more than 25 years of dedicated service in the human rights field, Mr. Aryal has consistently advanced the organization’s mission of justice, accountability, and democratic values. His leadership journey within HURON began in 2000 as General Secretary of the Kathmandu District Branch. He later became a Central Committee Member in 2005 and served as HURON’s General Secretary from 2012 to 2015. He subsequently led the organization as President from 2015 to 2020 during his first term. Over the years, he has been instrumental in expanding HURON’s role as one of Nepal’s most credible civil society watchdogs.

Mr. Aryal has spearheaded initiatives on refugee rights, transitional justice, torture, free speech, and advocacy in cases of human rights violations. Under his leadership, HURON played a pivotal role as an independent observer during the Madhesh Aandolan, systematically documenting and reporting abuses committed by both government authorities and opposition groups to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He also directed HURON’s nationwide observation of the 2074 Local Elections, successfully mobilizing more than 4,000 members under the Citizens’ Campaign for Clean Elections. In addition, he coordinated the Human Rights for Justice Network.

Through his vision and commitment, Mr. Aryal has strengthened HURON’s credibility as a leading human rights institution in Nepal. His work continues to focus on safeguarding fundamental rights, advancing transitional justice processes, ensuring state accountability, and amplifying the voices of marginalized and vulnerable communities at both national and international platforms.
